Patia Borjia

Caker Crush

I met Patia Borjia on the Instagram, as tends to be the way these days, and was immediately sucked in by her warmth and enthusiasm to be my next Caker crush! Check her out posting in the Mugler show here - insane!! It turns out she lives with photographer Stephen Velastegui, so it was a no brainer to send her some cake kits and get him to shoot her making one in their cute New York home kitchen.

Patia chose Matcha Cherry (you go girl) and looks straight fire baking it with her maraschino cherries.

  • Can you write a short paragraph about yourself - you can talk about anything at all.

I’m Patia!!! I’m a dreamer… I like helping people. I get stressed writing about myself, but those are the only two things I can think of!

  • What makes you feel powerful?

    My resilience.

  • Tell me about the best day of your life so far.

Everyday is better than the one before!

  • What does food mean in your family? Are there any classic dishes?

Food is cultural - my mom is Filipino and my dad is Black. I love chicken adobo, sinigang, lechon kawali, and every single soul food dish that exists. Savory followed by a sweet dessert is the perfect meal to me.

  • What’s your favourite thing to cook or bake?

Turon - a Filipino roll with brown sugar, plantain, and jackfruit!

  • What was your birthday cake of choice as a kid?

Vanilla from Publix. There should be a law that every child receives a birthday cake from Publix every year.

  • Which 3 people, dead or alive do you wish you could share the cake you made with?

My nanay, her mom… and if my dog Pocari could turn into a human then definitely her too!

  • What’s the dessert of your dreams? It doesn’t have to be one that you’ve already tasted or even one that exists.

My two favourite desserts are key lime pie & creme brulee… so if a combination of that exists, I want it and I want it now.

  • What star sign are you and what traits from it resonate with you?

Cancer sun, Leo rising, Gemini Moon. My venus being in Cancer is the best part of my chart because it’s proof I’m not evil, I’m just a decisive crybaby.

  • So many people in our generation feel a collective sense of doom when thinking about the current troubles our civilisation face - do you share this feeling? How do you cope and how do you help?

The anxieties centered around a global pandemic/racial tensions/etc is a new thing for a lot of people. I’ve always lived with that sense of doom lying in the back of my mind… I understood how annoying reality actually is at a very young age because I experienced way more tragedy than joy during my childhood.

I’m tired of being depressed and I’m tired of thinking about trauma. My mom and I don’t connect over mental health. She doesn’t get why I get depressed and I don’t get why she isn’t depressed. She doesn’t coddle me and it's for the best. A few years ago I asked about her relationship to depression and she said, “I know we had nothing and it was hard but why would I be depressed when I have you in my life?”

  • What is your favorite album or artist of all time?

    Future - Astronaut Status!!!

  • If you could have a wardrobe full of one designer’s clothes, who would it be?

    Vetements or Balenciaga…

  • Dinner in a hot air balloon at sunset, lunch in a giant pillowy flower, or breakfast in a treehouse at the top of the highest tree?

Dinner in a hot air balloon at sunset! I love aerial views.

  • What’s the coolest thing about living in New York?

The fact that I can order White Claws to be delivered at any time of the night.

  • If you could live anywhere else in the world where would it be?

I don’t know yet, but I really want to have a huge farm one day.
