Meet Shaquille aka Half Queen - a filmmaker, event producer, and DJ who I’m completely obsessed with. We visited her at home and duo Veronica Crockford-Pound + Joseph Griffen photographed her on film as she baked a Lemon Strawberry Poppy Seed Cake Kit. Just so…badass.
Can you write a short paragraph about yourself - you can talk about anything at all.
My name is Shaquille, I'm a Fijian + pākehā filmmaker, event producer, and DJ. I'm a human beeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiinnnnngggg
What makes you feel powerful?
A sickening look. Commanding a space with music. Being alive really.
What music are you listening to at the moment?
The new TROPIXX EP by my good friend Jesswar is on heavy rotation.
What makes you proud of your generation?
The people, the sense of community + interconnectivity, the undying pursuit of truth + justice, strung together with stupid humour.
So many people in your generation (and mine) feel a collective sense of doom when thinking about the current troubles our civilisation face - do you share this feeling? How do you cope and how do you help?
Of course I share that feeling, how could I not? The generations before us almost completely caked it. I cope by being hyper self aware and help by understanding my role. We all have a role to play in the cycle and in the collective.
What is your favorite album or artist of all time?
Ahhhh I could never name one fave of either but here are 3 albums that are up there for me: Take Me Apart by Kelela, Honey by Robyn + Yeezus by Kanye West.
If you could work with any photographer who would it be?
Hassan Hajjaj :O
Dinner in a bubble under the sea, or breakfast on a cloud?
Absolutely under the sea, I'm ready to live my Squidward fantasy. I wouldn't ever come back~~~
