ROB TENNENT

Caker Crush

Rob Tennent is kind of an enigma - he’s like a wise old person in a young, incredibly stylish body. Rob makes my Lemon Strawberry Poppy Seed Cake Kit in his Auckland home, shot by Veronica Crockford-Pound and Joseph Griffen.

I asked Rob a few questions :)

  • Can you write a short paragraph about yourself - you can talk about anything at all.

I was born in Cambodia to a Vietnamese mother and a European father. I spent the first decade of my life travelling and living around the world before settling in NZ when I was 12. Upon graduating university, I found my love of fashion and photography. And now I am a local creative that creates content for different brands and companies! I absolutely love what I do, especially casting and photography.

  • What makes you feel powerful?

Good question! I’d say I feel powerful when I am at my fittest, and when I’m doing what I love.

  • Tell me about the best day of your life so far.

There have been many, but I remembered spending a day in Omaha with a friend, rolling around in the sand and jumping over waves, it was so care free.

  • What does food mean in your family? Are there any classic dishes?

It’s a huge part of my life. My mother is Vietnamese so springrolls or pho are a huge tradition in our household. My grandma taught my mum, and she’s taught me.

  • What’s your favourite thing to cook or bake?

I love a vegan tofu scramble! Or mushroom pasta!

  • What was your birthday cake of choice as a kid?

Cambodia wasn’t really known for great cake! Usually something vanilla with bad cream haha but red velvet was my favourite growing up!

  • Which 3 people, dead or alive do you wish you could share the cake you made with?

    My best friends! Definitely.

  • What’s the dessert of your dreams? It doesn’t have to be one that you’ve already tasted or even one that exists.

Honestly a nice chocolate cake with chocolate icing can never go wrong. Or something with Oreos.

  • What star sign are you and what traits from it resonate with you?

I am an Aquarius and they all resonate haha, especially being aloof.

  • What makes you proud of your generation?

    We are resilient and fighters.

  • What is your favorite album or artist of all time?

Good Girl Gone Bad by Rihanna is probably one of my favourite albums of all time! And probably one of my favourite artist as well.

  • If you were a new addition to the crayon box what colour would you be?

Pastel Mint, I see that for myself.

  • If you could live in the world depicted in one movie or novel, or if you could travel back to a different era, which would you choose?

Well, as a gay person of colour, history has not been kind so i’d born in the 90’s.

  • If you could work with any photographer who would it be?

Hugo Comte, he is so talented.

  • Dinner in a bubble under the sea, or breakfast on a cloud?

Breakfast on a cloud for sure!

  • What’s the coolest thing about living in Auckland?

Being surrounded by beautiful mountains and beaches.

  • If you could live anywhere else in the world where would it be?

    Marseille
