Lucia & Eugene

Caker Couple
When we first met Lucia and Eugene in their tasting they were the sweetest little cake enthusiasts. The kind of couple who are a joy to meet, and just seem to work together. Finding love on the nightlife scene seems to be a trend with our Caker Couples and Lucia and Eugene are no exception, meeting at the iconic Cassette Nine when they were just 19! Their wedding pictures are nothing short of perfect and I think we can all agree they will be having some good looking children! Here’s a little Q&A we did with the lovely couple about their special day….
Age and job of you and your partner:
Eugene, 26, PR Account Manager. Lucia, 26, Marketing Specialist.
How did you meet?
Lucia: We found love in the club, meeting for the first time at Cassette 9 at the tender age of 19. We were introduced by a mutual friend who thought we'd be a great match and she was my Best Woman at our wedding!
At what point did you know your partner was a keeper?
Lucia: I always felt strongly that Eugene was the one for me. We moved in together after a year and a half of dating and when we passed the test of living together, that's when it really hit me that he was the person I wanted to share my whole life with.
How did you propose?
Eugene: We had a romantic tropical getaway on a small island off the coast of Tonga. It was the season when whales were coming in and Lucia and I were watching them from the sandy shores while drinking wine. As the sun started to set I surprised her with the ring that I knew she had her eye on. I had a speech planned out in my head but my heart began to pound and I was so nervous that what came out of my mouth was "Sooo... will you marry me?" Lucia: I was completely surprised and blown away! It was my dream ring I'd tried on three years ago, an antique European cut diamond with a rose gold hexagonal setting and diamond band from Walker and Hall. I said yes and then proceed to cry a lot (with happiness of course!).
What did you do for your Hen's party?
Lucia: I had a Ladies Lunch with my bridesmaids and fam at Pilkingtons with copious amounts of champagne. At lunch, I was surprised with a Matakana getaway complete with an itinerary of a fancy dinner, wine tasting, followed by brunch and paddle boarding the next day. It was the perfect low-key get away with my girls. The highlight was hanging out in our Air BnB after dinner, drinking gin and tonics in our pyjamas and playing card games. I've never laughed so much in one night!
Where was your dress from? (We think it's incredible!)
Lucia: Thank you so much! My dress was from Pronovias, designed and made in Spain. I wanted something which was modern and glamorous, while still classic and timeless.
What would be your number one tip for a couple planning their wedding?
Lucia: Choose what are the most important aspects of the wedding for you and then work your budget around that.
Tell us about the cake you had and why you chose it..
Lucia: As soon as we started wedding planning I knew I wanted our wedding cake to be from The Caker. We booked in for a cake tasting and were blown away by the flavours. We decided on lemon and raspberry with full coverage vanilla bean cream cheese icing. I requested our cake be made extra lemony and it was divine. We had a custom dried wreath made by Mark Antonia to decorate the cake.
Did you have a honeymoon and if so where did you go/what did you do?
Lucia + Eugene: We wanted to stay close to Auckland after our wedding so we could spend time with our family and friends who were in town from overseas. So we booked an Air BnB in Leigh with panoramic views, spa pool, fireplace and enough room for visitors. It was really relaxing and precious time together as well as catching up with friends. The location meant we were close to so many wonderful places to explore and eat and drink - like the Sculptereum, Matakana Market Kitchen, and Heron's Flight Vineyard. We'd love to go to Greece in 2019 for a proper honeymoon getaway!
